Sad Day 02/15/2008

Friday February 15th was a very sad day for me, Gracie our ancient and faithful beagle had to be put to sleep, she had colon cancer. I did not want to believe it was time but I finally took the good and true advice of my wife who almost always seems to know best about these things that I can never see. Here are some recent pictures of her Grace, not my wife, relaxing in the living room while waiting for dinner, her last walk in the snow. We picked her up along side the highway about sixteen years ago it was very near Christmas time and that was how she got her name. Just a puppy then as soon as the truck door opened she leaped straight up on the seat between my wife and me frantically searching for something to eat. She had apparently been surviving by going into local barns and eating horse feed. Gracie stayed hungry for the entire sixteen years we knew her eating was her favorite thing in life. After eating she most liked to hoard things bones rawhide chews any kind of treat she could find she would stash under sofa cushions in trash cans and actually bury in the yard on occasion. She was a gifted talker barking non stop mostly to announce to the world that she was still here! Hey pay attention to me I’m talking to you! None of the other dogs saw any reason to be alarmed at least not enough to talk about it.

Card Reader Problems

Just posting a few pictures here so I can access them from the web.

Old card reader has worked fine for CF cards and SD cards 512Mb and under

Old Reader

Began having problem when I went to newer 4Gb cards. I shot almost 2500

pictures on my Canon S3IS and on the first attempt the old reader was able to

download almost 900 of them before causing the following BSOD.

 Blue Screen of Death

After that it would not

download using Win Explorer no real errors just timed out. So I tried using

the Canon software and was able to download all of the test pictures off of

the card. Continuing to test using Win Explorer I finally got an “error reading

card message”.  So I bought a new Reader that has been able to handle the

new 4Gb card pretty well I think the old reader had trouble with the SDHC.

 New Reader Formats

During further testing of the new card I got another Kernal_Stack  BSOD.

The new reader was plugged into one port and that was what I was testing

but the old reader was still plugged into another port. At this point I am

not sure which one caused the errror because I am not getting a dump

listing even though the BSOD states that it is ”starting a dump”

Here is the startup and recovery parameters I have set up

Dump Settings

But here is what is in the Minidump folder.

 No New Dumps

The overwrite existing option does not work and the only file is an old one

from the system testing at build time.

Back from the Cruz

The night before Cruising and all through South Beach there was art deco

painted with neon like the Cadillac hotel pictured below.

Pre Cruise Dinner

My pre cruise dinner, mahi mahi in a black bean salsa was a really good meal.

Fun_Ship

Well we made it back from our Carnival(Fun Ship) cruise. What an ordeal, I

hope to never ever again be confined insuch a small place with so many

ill mannered children and rude, drunk or possibly both adults.

Here is a picture of what we ran into when trying to get to Rosie’s cafeteria.

Ha Ha just kidding actually I think this was taken during the mandatory

saftey drill. All hands on Deck!

Safety Drill

All of the excursions we took were interesting and enjoyable but we always

had to go back to the fun ship. Fortunately for us our cabin stewards took

excellent care of our cabin state room, giving us a place to get away from

the jostling and over crowding that existed everywhere else on the ship.

Our Cabin complete with pets! Scorpion

We may take another cruisesomeday but when we do we will be sure to schedule

when all children are in school and would probably try some cruise line other

than Carnival. The people we met at our assigned dinner table were a very

enjoyable group of people to have dinner with and we both enjoyed the fine

dining part of the cruise very much. Unfortunately we forgot to buy the cruise

line pictures that were taken at every possible opportunity so we don’t have

any pictures of the dining room and our table mates.

Rosie the Riveter Ice Dragon

Meals other than dinner were served in Rosie’s cafeteria which was always

extremely overcrowded the food was good though so I never went hungry.

Our Western Caribbean cruise stopped first at Grand Cayman, where we

took the Stingray City tour and then did some shopping in Georgetown

at Margaritaville.

Stingray City Margaritaville Grand Cayman

Then on to Roatan island off of Honduras where Elizabeth spent the day

relaxing in the ship Spa. While I went off to do some diving at

Anthony’s Key where I met this resident of the wall we were diving.
Wall Resident

Next on to Belize where we went to some Mayan ruins this was billed

as a moderately physical activity but it was hot and pretty strenuous

and we were thoroughly exhausted when we got back.

XUNANTUNICH Ruins1 Ruins side view

Finally Costa Maya in Mexico which is a fairly new tourist location, not

heavily built up with resorts and fairly remote. So we took the Jungle

tour where we were loaded onto an open truck with acanvas top and

driven around the jungle for several hours then deposited on a

very nice beach for lunch.

Costa Maya Beach Another Costa Maya Beach

Here is a picture of me sampling one of the local dishes (fresh termites).

If you look really close you can see one of them on my cheek.

Local Dish

I left my shoes on the beach and nearly went lame walking back to the ship

barefooted on the sun baked concrete pier. Well it’s midnight and I am too

tired to continue editing pictures and text so good bye for now. Well we had

a really good time hope everyone else found something fun to do while we were gone.

The Dilbert Parable

In the beginning there was only the Plan.

And then came the assumptions.

And the assumptions were without form.

And the plan was completely without substance

And darkness fell upon the faces of the Employees.

And they spoke amongst themselves, saying

“It’s a load of crap and it stinks”.

And the employees went to the Supervisors, saying

“It is a bucket of dung and no one can bear the stink”.

And the Supervisors went to their Managers, saying

“It is a container of excrement and none can stand the smell”.

And the Managers went to the Division Directors, saying

“It is a vessel of fertilizer and none can stand it’s strength”.

And the Directors went to the Executive Directors, saying

“It aids plant growth and is very powerful”.

And the Executive Directors went to the president. saying

“Our plan promotes growth and is very powerful”.

And the President went to the Board of Directors, saying

“This plan will actively promote the growth of this organization”.

And the Board of Directors looked upon the plan and saw that it was good.

And the Plan became Policy!

Yeah that sound about right!
